Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina

After reading the link above, I talked with some friends about this and call it what you want but I agree with a statement from Luna...

they're all pissing and moaning about looting..people arent looting jewellery shops or stuff like that, they're looting for water and food

Now this I agree with. A small majority of assholes are causing so much grief by taking it upon themselves to shoot at people helping rescue others. They're small minded and only really want to cause more mayhem than has already happened. In my opinion, people looting for food and water should be overlooked. What harm are they actually causing? and the "white people find food and black people loot" WTF IS THIS?? and another question. Indonesia got flood relief. Will there be anything for New Orleans or will it be overlooked because America is suppose to be the most powerful country in the world? Is that what's it's going to come down too? The 100,000 people who decided to stay in the city..did they do so because they couldnt afford to leave? No transport, no help from others. Is this the way we're looking at the world now? Anyone care to leave a view? Do so with a comment, please. I'd be interested to see what people think

Looting is a crime even amidst a crisis. If anyone was looking to take anything from my home during these circumstances, they'd find themselves in dire need of medical attention (if not worse).

Looters are a mob, mobs are extremely dangerous. In a mob, feelings of responsibility and inhibition are decreased, because you can (erroneously) divvy up the blame between all members of the mob. Murders and gross property destruction are all too common effects of mob looters.

There are shelters available for those who are unable to leave the threatened area that provide food and water. If these people chose to stay at home and not go to a shelter (which was probably mandatory, the Florida Keys are required to evacuate if there is a good possibility of a strike), it's their problem. I feel no sympathy for those who were stuck at home and felt the need to steal provisions. They made the choice themselves.

but Rob, these people arent mobs. The people i was talking about, are individual people trying to survive. These people arent smashing up property. Theyre not holding guns to people's heads to steal their property. Its survival.

As for the shelters, i know a lot of people that, given the same situation, wouldn't leave their houses. Personally, I'd get the fuck out. But some people are set in their ways. Fortunately, here in Australia, we rarely get natural disasters of that magnitude. Pretty much, the main thing we get is bushfires. And I've seen that, even then, a lot of people won't evacuate. People put a lot of heart into their homes. And I guess they think, well I'll go down with the ship if it happens. That's a part of human nature.

There actually are people looting things that they don't need or cannot use- like TVs and stuff. Those people should be punished as they are criminals taking advantage of the disaster. Others are doing what is necessary to find drinkable water and food.

This is why the whole area should be fenced off and flooded.
